Episode 4: Confusion
The phone kept ringing so Big Al answered it.
"Hello."
"Big Al I need your help."
Big Al slammed the phone down. His friend had just been murdered and already some jackass was pretending to be him. The phone started ringing again. Big Al turned on the answering machine and turned the volume down. He didn't feel like talking to anyone.
Big Al went to bed. He woke up to the sound of someone knocking on his door. The person seemed pretty persistent so Big Al knew it just had to be Mona. He yelled out.
"I'm coming. Don't pound a hole through my door."
Big Al opened the door and got the shock of his life. He had to be seeing things so he slammed the door shut. The knocking started up again.
"Let me in Big Al. I need your help."
"Go away. You're dead."
"I'm alive Big Al."
Big Al was confused. The night before he had been at the morgue. He saw his friend Leroy's body. Big Al opened the door so he could look outside. He had expected to find an empty hallway but instead he found his friend looking very much alive. He opened the door and stepped out into the hallway. He hugged Leroy. Big Al wanted to make sure this was really happening.
"Big Al I can't breathe."
"Sorry."
Big Al released Leroy and just looked at him.
"What's going on?"
"Can we go inside? I'm so hungry I could eat a hippo."
They went inside. Leroy sat down on the couch while Big Al brewed a pot of coffee and looked around for something to eat. He found a box of cookies. When he walked back into the living room he noticed that Leroy wasn't on the couch.
"Leroy?"
At first Big Al thought his friend was in the bathroom. Big Al sat down and stated munching on the cookies. He went back to the kitchen to fix two cups of coffee. When Big Al walked back into the living room with the coffees he noticed that Leroy still wasn't there. Big Al searched his apartment but there was no sign of him anywhere so he checked the fire escape.
"What in the hell is going on here?"
Big Al was sure Leroy had just been in his apartment. The phone started ringing. Big Al ran over to the phone. Surely Leroy was calling him. He picked up the phone.
"Leroy where did you go?"
"Big Al."
Big Al realized it was Mona on the phone. He couldn't figure out what was going on.
"Big Al are you there?"
"What do you want Mona?"
"I just wanted to check on you. Take the day off."
"Thanks Mona."
Big Al hung up the phone.
"How is he?"
Mona looked over at Laguna who was snapping her gum.
"I'm not sure."
Laguna noticed that man in the trench coat coming in again. He smiled when he saw Laguna waling over to his table.
"I'll have bacon and eggs with a black cup of coffee."
"Coming right up sir."
When Laguna went to the counter with the guy's order she heard Mona talking on the phone.
"I'm worried about him. He thought Leroy was the one calling him."
Laguna just stood there.
"Thank you Goobler."
Mona got off the phone. Laguna gave her the order for the trench coat guy.
"Is Big Al going to be okay?"
"I hope so dear."
Big Al wondered if he was going crazy. He looked at the blinking light on his answering machine. Maybe Leroy had left him a message. He remembered turning the volume down so he put it up and pushed play.
"This is Gwen from Dr Sorrenson's office. I'm calling to remind you of your appointment on the 28th. Call me if you need to reschedule."
