This is a post Apocalypse book. Most of the world has been wiped out by the Great Death. Zupay is the big bad of the neighborhood. He kidnaps one of the women from the village so a couple of the hunters go out to rescue her. A deal is struck between them and Zupay.
I did enjoy this book and liked the runestone picture at the start of each chapter. It was a nice but little touch that you don't always see since you'll usually see the number of the chapter and a title if it has one. There were a few times when I was confused. I'm not sure if that was just me but I would think something was happening that turns out to be a dream.
Joachim and Barruch are sent on a quest to get ingredients for a immortality potion for Zupay. He has control over demons that seem to be like reavers but not quite as scary. They end up going to another realm where they end up in the middle of a war. Things jump back and forth but I think Michael does a pretty good job of tying things together but it would have been nice to have an explanation for how those demons came about. I do think it would have been better if this book was split up into more than one book so we could find out more about how things became this way along with the other realm. Even though this is set in the future the people seemed to be living more like those in the past which includes animals that are extinct along with magic. It is quite an interesting tale that twists and turns and I for one will certainly check out another book by this author since I did enjoy it despite the confusion.
