This story had potential but it just fell flat for me. I can see this being turned into two books. One could be a smut book and the other could be an action adventure potentially steampunk book. It just didn't flow and feel like one story. It felt like an experiment gone wrong. I didn't really like how sex was tied into Cassandra's powers. If she was a succubus it would have made more sense but she's a fire mage.
Cassandra finds out about her powers and ends up going to Duke Camden's place. She's basically kidnapped by Garrett. The Duke is like that guy in X Men. Oops I can't remember his name. Garrett is paired up with her because her powers are kept under control through sex. I found that unnecessary. Nothing really happens for about half of the book. As a member of M.U.S.E. Cassandra is given a mission which seems to come a bit too easily.
She just happens to be invited to a party of the guy who has the relic they need. Since this story appears to take place in I'm thinking the nineteenth century I found it weird that Roderick would invite Cassandra to his bachelor party which turned out to be an orgy complete with drugs that lowered peoples inhibitions. Also Cassandra's powers were activated when she had sex for the first time. I just thought it weird that a guy who asked Cassandra to be his mistress would invite her to a party after she turned him down. I guess he thought she'd change her mind.
After a successful mission Garrett and Cassandra are given a break which doesn't last long because they need to go after another relic. The names of the relics amuse me especially the first one because it sounds like the name of a car. Things pick up some while they are trying to figure out what this relic is. The twist wasn't too bad but I felt like it got resolved too easily. This story just wasn't for me. I couldn't connect with any of the characters and feel like Cassandra and Garrett really had no connection except for lust. I believe this is the first in a series and sadly it isn't off to a great start.
