I haven't read the first book in this series but it sounds like the two characters that are spotlighted in this book are on the edges of the previous book so I don't feel like I really missed anything by diving into this book first. The description and the cover are a bit misleading. I enjoyed the writing but I don't really like Devi and Ben at least not together.
Ben was borderline stalker when he first met Devi and her friends at an entrepreneur competition. I wonder if that's explained in the first book because I'm pretty clueless. Since it was a bit vague I was thinking they were all cheerleaders. Anyhoo Ben finally gets Devi to cave and a bombshell gets blown up shortly after they begin dating. It just made him look like a total douche.
Devi had her own issues and didn't really know what she wanted so it is kinda ironic that she was the fearless one. I did like the moments when she was working at the center with the kids. I didn't really like Ben all that much but he did have his good moments. It was sweet when he was playing with that kid and he was a good friend to Devi. They just don't seem to be that good of a fit to me as a couple. One thing I did like was the two having a friendship before they started dating. I think I'd check out other books by Shae but I wasn't too crazy about this one. I just couldn't connect with any of the characters.
