Synopsis:Seventeen-year-old Maggie Ellmes is dogged by a case of chronic bad luck. She figures that’s just her lot in life—that is, until the psychic at Blackheath’s annual carnival reveals that Maggie’s problems are caused by more than just ordinary misfortune; she’s actually been cursed.
Desperate to shake the hex, Maggie has no choice but to seek out the help of Joel Tomlins, a rebellious classmate who’s descended from Blackheath’s most powerful line of witches. After breaking all of his coven’s conventions to help her, Joel discovers that the curse isn’t as bad as Maggie fears. In fact, it’s much, much worse.
Gabriella Lepore lives on the coast of Wales in the United Kingdom. She began writing at an early age and grew up with a passion for all things supernatural—especially witches! She currently has six Young Adult books in print: Evanescent, The Blackheath Witches, How I Found You, Secrets In Phoenix, and The Witches of the Glass Castle books 1 & 2.
Since I've already read one of Gabriella's books I had a feeling I'd like this one too. Hello my name is Barbara and I'm a book addict and books about witches are my weakness. Anyhoo I finished this really quick and have to wonder if this is a series because it felt like it wasn't finished. I could see how some could be turned off by the Chosen One thing that never really gets explained. I really enjoyed the book but I couldn't help but feel like I was missing something. It would have been nice if there was at least a little portion of the book dealing with the mother instead of the book starting after she abandoned her family not once but twice.
When it comes to boarding schools I always think of rich people. I'm not even sure if they have boarding schools here since I always think of them being in Europe. I do like the relationship between Maggie and Joel. They reconnect when she needs his help with a problem. Joel's family is quite interesting and not because his family is a witch and one of his siblings is a chosen one. They were once friends and sorta drifted apart but thanks to her problem they start hanging out and he works on fixing her problem. I have to admit that I suspected at least part of the twist but that didn't stop me from enjoying this book because I really love Gabriella's writing style. I of course wand to read more books by her.
There's witchcraft but that isn't all the book contains. It also has some really good friendships which are often the part that gets left out of books. I realize it has to be hard to incorporate friendships when you have other things in mind so it seems like that is the easiest one to just have drift off to the side but it stayed strong from start to finish. Even though I do want to read more stand alones I really do hope this is the start of a series because I just feel like it is because I want to know more and that ending did make me think that there has to be at least another book since it left me hanging and wanting more.
